Free fishing day draws enthusiasts despite wet weather

Wet weather didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the anglers who ringed the Overland Trail Pond Saturday morning for the city of Sterling's Fishing Is Fun Day.

Hosted annually by the city's Parks, Library and Recreation Department during Colorado Parks and Wildlife's free fishing weekend, the event encourages youngsters to test their fishing skills with a biggest fish contest, based on weight, and a casting contest that measures how close they can cast their line to a target.

After a morning of fishing, the participants were invited to enjoy a hot dog meal cooked up by PLR staff, with the food donated by Eagle.

Winners of the contests were:

Boys: Kyson, 1 lb. 8.7 oz.

Girls: Alayah, 1 lb. 8.4 oz.

Boys: Braden, 5.9 oz.

Boys: Victor, 1 lbs. 4 oz.

Boys: Jeremiah, 14.7 oz.

Girls: Nicolette, 2.9 oz.

Boys: Michael, 2.9 oz.

Girls: Briggs, 6 feet

Boys: Neovani, 2 feet, 5 inches

Girls: Alayah, 7-1

Boys: Jacky: 4-7

Girls: Harper, 11-1

Boys: Victor, 5-5

Boys: Jeremiah, 8-6

Girls: AJ, 19 feet

Boys: Ryan, 4-7

Girls: Addison, 14-4
