Hillsborough Firefighters Rescue Blue Heron Tangled In Fishing Line

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — A tangled blue heron was rescued by Hillsborough firefighters this Memorial Day weekend.

On Saturday, May 27, Hillsborough Police called the Flagtown Fire/Rescue - Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Co. #1 to Ann Van Middlesworth Park to help with an animal rescue, said the fire department.

Firefighters found a blue heron tangled in a fishing line. The crew paddled across the pond and were able to cut the fighting lines and free the bird, said the fire department.

"Although unhappy about the close contact by our members, the bird appeared uninjured and paddled away and found shelter under some branches a short distance away," said the fire department.

The Flagtown Fire and Rescue is always looking for volunteers. Interested candidates may stop by any Thursday night at the firehouse at 7 p.m. at 20 Equator Ave. There is a 16- to 18-year-old junior member program as well as regular membership for those interested in being firefighters. Some of the benefits include scholarship opportunities, incentives, and a retirement (LOSAP) program.
