How to make a crochet flower

If you’re new to crochet or have been hooking away for a while, there's a fabulous new technique to add to your repertoire – it's time to learn how to crochet a flower.

So, let's give it a go!

All you’ll need is some DK weight yarn and a crochet hook. Your hook size is always dependant on your tension and the yarn you’re using, but a 4mm hook is a good starting point here.

If you find your petal crochet flower comes out a little stiff, it's probably time to try a larger hook – on the flipside, if it's a bit floppy when you’ve finished, try a smaller one next time.

You’ll be able to make several of these easy crochet flowers from any ball of DK weight yarn, so this free crochet pattern is perfect for using up oddments and leftovers from your other crochet projects.

There's something particularly meditative about crocheting flowers. Most effective and enjoyable on the hook using cotton yarn, flowers tend to be crocheted in the round. And the one below is no exception.

Some may use the magic ring, but this flower pattern uses basic crochet stitches including chain stitches, double crochets, slip stitch (sl st), trebles and half-trebles.

Just be careful to take note that this free crochet pattern is given in UK abbreviations – in the US, these abbreviations may look the same but actually they mean something different. A double crochet stitch in US abbreviations for example, is equivalent to a treble in UK terms.

Finished measurements: Approximately 10cm in diameter.

Using a 4mm hook, make 6ch and join with a ss to form a ring.

Round 1: 6ch (counts as 1tr and 3ch), [1tr into ring, 3ch] 10 times, 1tr into ring, 1ch, 1htr into 3rd of 6ch from beg of rnd.

Round 2: 1ch, 1dc into ch-sp partly formed by htr at end of previous round, [3ch, 1dc into next ch-sp] 11 times, 1ch, 1htr into dc from beg of rnd.

Round 3: 1ch, 1dc into ch-sp partly formed by htr at end of previous round, [6ch, 1dc into next ch-sp, 3ch, 1dc into next ch-sp] 5 times, 6ch, 1dc into next ch-sp, 1ch, 1htr into dc from beg of rnd

Round 4: 1ch, 1dc into ch-sp partly formed by htr at end of previous round, [(5tr, 2ch, 5tr) all into next ch-sp, 1dc into following ch-sp] 5 times, (5tr, 2ch, 5tr) all into next ch-sp, sl st to dc from beg of rnd.

Fasten off. Darn in ends.
