New Corpus Christi business: Yarn Texas offers sanctuary for knitters
Are you a yarn lover?
Well you're in luck.
Knitters and crocheters meet every week at Yarn Texas — a new business focused on creating with yarn — to create and converse.
Susan Chilcoat opened the business on Feb. 16 — her birthday — to offer a sanctuary for yarn artists, both experts and beginners.
"I want people to be able to come in here, and no matter their skill level, to come hang out with us and learn," said Chilcoat, who started knitting a decade ago.
Yarn Texas has given Chilcoat a creative outlet and brought her together with amazing people she might not have met otherwise, she said, which is why she's passionate about yarn.
"You can make a full garment or blanket out of string," she said. "You're creating when you're using yarn or sewing or stitching or whatever. It's great for your brain, a great stress reliever and great community builder."
The yarn shop is located at 1122 Morgan Avenue, in the same retail strip as The Coffee Mugg(le), which opened in December. Chilcoat said the nearly 700-square foot space "seemed like the perfect match to be near a coffee shop."

The shop sells all kinds of yarn — fancy or not — tools, T-shirts and yarn earrings
"I've always wanted a little shop of my own, something for creative people," Chilcoat said. "We've not had a yarn shop for so long in Corpus. It all just kind of came together."
