WATCH: Man rides beached shark like a cowboy

Aug 07, 2023

A video taken at Panama City Beach, Florida, has recently gone viral as it shows a group of people "wrestling" with a shark that was pulled onto the beach.

The video, shared by AL.com, shows the group of people struggling to pull the shark from the water as a large group of bystanders watches around them.

While it wasn't confirmed, it appears that the fish was caught by a fisherman who reeled it in, as the men pulling the shark from the water can be seen grabbing onto what appears to be a fishing line.

As the shark is fighting for its freedom, one of the men can be seen jumping onto its back and pretending to ride it like a cowboy.

The shark can be seen continuing to struggle in the video as it knocks a couple of the men around with its tail.

The video comes as shark week nears, with marine biologists warning that sightings and encounters will increase throughout the next couple of weeks.

Sharks come closer to shore this time of the year because of food supply and water temperatures. But, come July, they will begin to move further away from shore, as the water will begin to be too warm for the animals, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

NOAA shared that the risk of a shark attack is "very small," but it still shared there are ways to minimize your chances of having a "Jaws" encounter.

"To reduce your risk, don't swim too far from shore, stay in groups, avoid being in the water during darkness or twilight, don't go in the water if you are bleeding from a wound, leave shiny jewelry at home, and avoid brightly colored swimwear," NOAA shared.

The video ends with the group of men releasing the shark back into the ocean. No injuries were suffered as a result of the incident.
