Although carmakers across the globe have different strategies depending on the markets they serve in, all of them have one goal in common: using renewable resources and sustainable materials in their cars as much as possible. Today, on the occasion of the World Environment Day, we decided to look at the 5 electric cars that get eco-friendly materials in their cabin:

Hyundai's flagship EV in India, the Ioniq 5, boasts multiple sustainable materials including bio paint and eco-friendly leather and fabric. The carmaker has used bio paint coating on the Ioniq 5's dashboard, steering wheel, switches, door pads, and dashboard. The bio paint consists of oil extractions from plants and corn. Its eco-friendly leather and fabric is derived from sugarcane, corn, and up to 32 plastic bottles, which are utilised for the seats, carpet and door armrests.

Being the Ioniq 5's sibling, the Kia EV6 also comes with a bunch of recycled and sustainable components. The carmaker has used a range of eco-friendly materials, which includes mushroom-derived components, bio-paint, vegan leather, and recycled bottles for upholstery, fabric elements on the door pads and dashboard, as well as the floormats. It also has plans to put plastic waste from oceans in its upcoming range of cars.

The XC40 Recharge, Volvo's first all-electric car for India, also packs many recycled parts, especially on the inside. This includes a leather-free interior and partially recycled carpets. Volvo has provided it in a dark grey cabin while the carpets come in a "Fjord blue" finish.

Skoda is expected to bring its flagship EV, the Enyaq iV, to India soon. The electric SUV is said to be the carmaker's most upcycled car till date. It uses sustainable materials for various purposes inside the cabin including recycled textiles for sound insulation, and recycled and remoulded polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle fibres for floor and boot mats. Its seats are made from PET bottles and wool, while the leather inside is tanned using olive leaf extracts.

The Mercedes-Benz EQS is one of the flagship electric sedans on sale in the Indian market. Being the top-of-the-line EV offering from the German marque, it does consist of multiple sustainable materials and components. The electric sedan gets cable ducts made with sustainable material obtained from mixed household waste, consisting of food waste, mixed plastics, cardboard, and even baby diapers. It also uses nylon yarn – derived from recycled carpets and fishing nets – for the floor coverings.
